HORIZONTAL GAZE NYSTAGMUS and OTHER FIELD SOBRIETY TESTS

Field Sobriety Tests in Georgia

There are a variety of tests used by Georgia patrol officers to determine probable cause to make a DUI/DWI arrest. The most popular tests are (1) one leg stand; (2) walk and turn; and/or (3) horizontal gaze nystagmus test. It is important to note that none of the tests are guaranteed to produce correct results. However, the tests have proven to be reliable indicators to form a basis for an arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

Typically when a driver is pulled over on a routine stop and the police officer suspects intoxication, field sobriety tests may be conducted. The driver must perform simple physical or cognitive tests to determine sobriety. In 1982, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines were created to help make these tests more accurate. They are now called ‘standardized field sobriety tests.’
